Microdermabrasion treatments are painless, and in fact quite relaxing. They employ the power of diamond microdermabrasion resurfacing wands to gently buff or massage your skin tissue driving out dead skin cells, oil, and entrenched contaminants that are then vacuumed through the re-surfacing wand. The treatment is like a ‘superficial skin polishing’ that feels like deep tissue massage. They are slow and progressive, and for best results received as a course of weekly or bi-weekly sessions, ranging from 2- 12 weeks. However, you will see immediate results. After just one treatment, this gentle, abrasive technique reveals a brand new skin surface that is healthier and revitalised. Your skin will have a fresh pink glow and feel smoother and softer. Microdermabrasion provides a safe alternative to invasive, skin-resurfacing techniques.
What results can be achieved?
You will notice an improvement in the texture and tone of your skin immediately after one treatment. You will experience general exfoliation, reduction in pore size and oil production, brightening of the skin, less blackheads, pimples and congestion, increased hydration, reduction of scars, fine lines and wrinkles. With use of your prescribed home care regime you will achieve fast and dramatic results and require less treatments.
Microdermabrasion VS Diamond Peel?
This skin-freshening technique can be performed using two different types of machines: a standard microdermabrasion machine, and the newer Diamond Peel machine.
What is the difference?
Introduced to the US market in 1996, standard microdermabrasion uses a device like a fine sandblaster to spray tiny aluminium-oxide crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin. The primary difference between microdermabrasion and the diamond peel is that Microdermabrasion involves the skin being “sandblasted” by aluminium-oxide crystals to remove the top layer of the skin while the diamond peel’s diamond tipped wands uses a particle-free method that canyield greater results with less down time. The regular crystal microdermabrasion technology involves the use of a special, hand-held device that propels a high-speed flow of aluminium-oxide crystals onto the skin. At the same time, the machine’s
vacuum system sucks away dirt, dead cells and used crystals. The diamond dermabrasion system, on the other hand, replaces the micro-crystal flow with a disposable or reusable diamond tip wand. Areas closer to the eyes and mouth can be abraded more accurately with diamond dermabrasion (no risk of stray crystals causing damage or being ingested).
How many treatments will I need?
Every client is different the number of treatments needed will depend on many factors. Our exceptional therapists can accurately quote a treatment plan when you have a consultation and skin analysis. The general course of treatments is 6-8 and can be done at intervals of 1-4 weeks.
What will happen during my treatment?
You will be made comfortable in the treatment room on one of our beauty beds. The treatment begins with a thorough cleansing and is followed by a skin diagnosis. The dermabrasion is performed by the therapist supporting your skin and moving a pen like handpiece in small lines across your skin. The entire face is covered. You will feel suction and gentle abrasiveness of the diamond tip. The sensation is comfortable and the level of suction is adjusted to suit each client. After the face has been treated, a mask selected by the therapist for you will be applied. We complete the treatment with the application of eye treatment cream, serum and moisturiser plus sunscreen. Microdermabrasion can be incorporated into other facial treatments or received as a stand alone treatment. LED is also extremely effective and boosts results when added to a Microdermabrasion treatment.
What will happen after my treatment?
You may be slightly flushed and feel a sensation like mild sunburn. This can last up to 24 hours but generally is gone within 2-5 hours. Keeping your skin cool will return your skin to its normal state faster. You will notice your skin feeling smoother very quickly. Some clients experience a tight feeling for several days following the treatment and this occurs due to the collagen production increasing and the oil production being reduced. Depending on your current skin condition and home care regime, you may experience a breakout as the congestion makes its way to the surface of the skin and then disappears. Your therapist will ensure you are prescribed the correct home to prevent and minimise breakouts.
Is Microdermabrasion right for me?
Microdermabrasion is safe and minimally invasive. There are some restrictions for the treatment. Clients that are currently taking Roaccutane or have taken Roaccutane in the last 6 months are not suitable for Microdermabrasion without a clearance note from their general practitioner or dermatologist. Clients with a history of keloid scarring may not be good candidates. Current cystic acne needs to controlled with other treatments before accepting Microdermabrasion. Freckles may not be significantly reduced as the treatment works on a superficial level and the pigmentation in freckles tends to be in deeper layers of the skin. Your skin will appear brighter though. Microdermabrasion will greatly reduce hormonal pigmentation and sun damage. We can treat many areas such as face, neck, décolletage, shoulders, hands and back.
Is there specific preparation or aftercare?
Yes, As Microdermabrasion provides deep exfoliation it is important to have stopped the use of any exfoliating products that have not been prescribed by your Light Aesthetics dermal therapist. To achieve best results, unprotected sun exposure needs to be avoided for 4 weeks before treatment commencement.
After Microdermabrasion you will need to follow the dermal plan prescribed by your therapist, this will maintain and boost your results. Please avoid a hot, sweaty workout and hot shower/bath for 12 hours following your treatment. Your skin must be protected from the sun daily.
